Tooth Bonding

Tooth Bonding Pittsburgh

What is dental bonding?
Tooth bonding is a quick and painless tooth correction procedure that can fix a variety of problems to improve smile appearance. Because dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin in a putty-like form, virtually any superficial tooth defect can be remedied. The dental bonding process involves gentle shaping of the putty, and then a permanent hardening step is performed using a special light.

What types of dental problems can bonding fix?
Bonding is a great “catch-all” procedure because it can address several tooth defects at once. Here are a few of the tooth issues that can be solved using cosmetic dental bonding:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Short or thin teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Tooth gaps or spaces
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Outdated fillings
  • Vulnerable or weakened teeth
  • Weakened tooth roots
  • Decayed teeth

What happens during the tooth bonding procedure?
Tooth bonding is one of the more conservative smile makeover options, meaning very little preparation time is needed. First, Dr. Maria Cavalier will evaluate the shade of your teeth and select a tone for your composite resin. Then, the surface of the tooth is roughened to create an ideal bonding surface. A special conditioning substance is applied to the tooth for further bonding assistance.

Dr. Cavalier then applies the bonding putty and shapes it to fit the required dimensions. The material is then smoothed for a clean surface and hardened with an ultraviolet light. For the final step, the tooth is further trimmed and polished for a beautiful finish. In just one visit, you’ll be walking away with a rejuvenated smile. Most bonding appointments last under an hour, unless multiple teeth are being treated.

When is bonding recommended?
Teeth bonding is often recommended for minor cosmetic issues and superficial dental problems that do not affect the tooth structure or function. It is used frequently on teeth that experience low bite pressure.

Will my bonded tooth need to be retreated in the future?
A bonded tooth can maintain its strength and appearance for up to 10 years, depending on the patient’s commitment to regular dental care and good health practices.
