What exactly is a Tooth crown?
Tooth crowns can be thought of as tooth restorations that strengthen and protect teeth that have become weakened due to tooth decay or injury. Teeth that are cracked or broken, have large holes due to cavities, or have been treated with root canals can benefit from the extra protection teeth crowns provide. The custom restoration is crafted in our lab and placed over the damaged tooth. Dr. Cavalier’s crowns are tooth-colored instead of metal, so the result is completely natural-looking. Most people aren’t able to distinguish the crowned teeth from real enamel.
Why are porcelain crowns so popular?
Porcelain is the most natural-looking choice for a crown restoration. It reflects light just like natural enamel and can be closely matched to your tooth shade. In addition, porcelain becomes very strong and durable when bonded to enamel. A skilled cosmetic dentist like Dr. Maria Cavalier in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, who understands the unique qualities and characteristics of porcelain, is best able to create and affix a porcelain crown safely and securely. Porcelain crowns are also very popular for people who have old or outdated crowns that are either weakened or seem to be separating from the gum line. Remember that to keep your porcelain crown lasting many years, you’ll need to brush regularly and stay on top of your dental checkups.
What is the crown application procedure like?
In most cases, Dr. Cavalier will be able to place your crown in just a few short, painless visits.
During your first visit, Dr. Cavalier will remove a portion of the enamel and take a mold of the tooth being restored. A tooth-colored filling will be used to stabilize and strengthen the tooth in preparation for the crown placement. Then, your mold is sent to our lab for the purpose of creating your custom crown. A temporary crown is then placed.
During your second visit, the temporary crown is removed and your new, custom crown will be bonded to the tooth. After a short fitting session to check that the crown is perfectly shaped and colored to match your teeth, the crown is then permanently affixed with special dental cement and a hardening light. After the cementing phase, your beautifully restored tooth is ready for you to show to the world.
Who is a good candidate for dental crowns?
A crown is recommended for anyone who has a tooth that is beyond repair with a filling, inlay or onlay. Damage due to decay, accident, wear, or grinding can be repaired with crowns. It should be noted, however, that more conservative techniques in cosmetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, bonding, and bleaching have replaced some of the instances when crowns were used in the past to achieve aesthetic goals.
Dr. Cavalier has years of experience placing natural-looking crowns for her patients. Thanks to her background at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, she is able to restore problem teeth to normal function and improve the appearance of your smile.
