Porcelain Veneers

Greensburg, Murrysville and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The two most popular cosmetic procedures are tooth whitening and porcelain veneers. Though they are very different procedures, they have similar effects. Your smile will be quickly and dramatically transformed by either one.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

They are thin, custom-made porcelain covers for front teeth. When the dental defects are not too severe, veneers are a nice way to simply cover them – give the teeth a new front surface and shape. That way, in one easy procedure, your smile is freed of:

  • Slight misalignment or crookedness
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Staining that doesn’t respond to tooth whitening
  • Small chips
  • Shallow cracks
  • Unevenly sized teeth

Many people have porcelain veneers done on the four central top front teeth, and many have them on lower teeth too and even on all teeth visible in your smile. They are not suitable for molars, but if you need improvement there, we offer porcelain crowns to strengthen and re-surface those chewing teeth.

What is porcelain?

Dental porcelain is a very important ingredient in cosmetic dentistry. It’s a white ceramic material that comes in many subtly different shades. By itself, porcelain is brittle, but after it’s bonded to the tooth, it’s durable and strong.

Porcelain is stain-resistant. That means that if you would like to have a tooth whitening procedure as well as veneers, it’s best to do the tooth whitening first. Then Dr. Cavalier can match the porcelain to your new shade of white.

Porcelain is also semi-translucent, like tooth enamel. It allows some light to pass through it and reflect off the layer below, the dental adhesive which holds the veneers firmly in place. In the same way, tooth enamel allows light to pass through it to the next tooth layer, the dentin, and reflect back. So both porcelain and enamel have that characteristic pearly shine.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

Veneers need two visits. In the first visit, your teeth will be prepared. A very thin layer of enamel is removed to make space for the thin veneers and still maintain your comfort and correct bite. Dr. Cavalier will take an impression of the teeth and send it, with accompanying information, to her dental lab. While the lab makes your veneers, you can have temporary veneers, but most people don’t need them.

In the second visit, Dr. Cavalier will temporarily attach the veneers and check them for good fit and comfort. When you and she are both satisfied with them, she will bond them permanently to the teeth, and now your smile is transformed.

Doing porcelain veneers well is as much an art as a science. Dr. Cavalier’s LVI training (Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies) has made her highly knowledgeable and skilled in both planning veneers to suit your face and smile, and bonding them strongly. She will give you a durable and very pleasing smile enhancement.
