Dental implants replace missing teeth in patients who have lost natural roots and enamel due to injury or disease. They consist of tooth roots below the gum line and replacement teeth that balance out the smile. If you are considering completing your smile with teeth implants, here is a brief summary of your implant options: Root Form, Plate Form and Subperiosteal.
Root Form Implants
Also called an endosteal implant, the root form implant is the most popular implant choice. A recreated “screw-type” tooth root is implanted into the jawbone during a surgical procedure. Then, the implanted root must fully heal. After the healing process is complete, the implant is uncovered beneath the gum tissue and an abutment, or piece that connects the root to the replacement tooth, is attached to the replacement root. The root form implant is recommended for patients who have ample jawbone area and healthy bone matter.
Plate Form Implants
A plate form implant, also called an endosteal implant, is the method of choice for patients who have insufficient jaw bone structure, specifically a narrow or short jaw. Basically, a long, flat implant is implanted below the gums and set upon the jawbone. At this location, bone and tissue eventually form around the implant to provide stability. Similar to the root form implant, the plate form implant is implanted during a surgical procedure.
Subperiosteal Implants
A subperiosteal implant is recommended for patients who are lacking sufficient jawbone width or height to hold a root form or plate form implant. Depending on the jawbone characteristics, a custom implant may be created which attaches to the jawbone and serves as a type of extender to enhance the jawbone surface. Through a surgical procedure or CT scan, an impression is taken of the area. Like the plate form implant, the implant is placed under the gums and on top of the jawbone.
